Some ideas for Google Circles

After playing with Google Circles for a couple of days, I really admire the feature. However there are still a couple of things I need in it:

Read items in overlapping Circles
Most of my Circles overlap. For example I have circles like “Philadelphians” and “friends”. I often add the same person to more than one circle, which is great. However this becomes a problem when the same updates resurface as I navigate between circles. Google Circles really needs a concept of “read” updates that need to go across circles.

Public Circles:
Another feature I would really like is the idea of creating a public circle around a topic and have people join in. In my case, I would love to create a circle around Android developers around Philadelphia since I help run the Philly Android Alliance User Group.

Smart Circles:
I’d also like circles to automatically filter all the content across Google Plus and return content based on my interests. This would an evolution of the sparks feature (which I don’t really use right now, since Twitter and RSS seem to do that job for me already). So as (public) links are shared on Google Plus, I’d like to see the people sharing it and the conversations around it.

Cross posting from Circles:
This is already a popular enough request I imagine, but I’d like to push an update I make to a specific Google Circle to my Twitter/Facebook/Linked In etc networks. So I’d like to create a circle named “to-twitter” who’s only job is to post the content to my Twitter account. This makes G-Circles my one destination to post content.

Thats some ideas I had, what do you guys think?

What other ideas do you have?

  1. Posting to Twitter via Circles is a win in my mind for Google+. Sure, you’re driving people out into the big scary web and out of Google+, but at least the search starts at Google+ every time. Here we arem, almost 20 years later and Facebook and Google are trying to own the internet like AOL once did…

  2. For Cross-posting: You can use one of various email-to-tweet services available to obtain an email address connected to your Twitter. Then add that email as “add a new person” in G+, add that profile to its own circle (“to-twitter”) and you have what you need.
Facebook offers this service directly. Simply find your email address at facebook.com/mobile. and set up in G+ the same way.

    1. Hey Rene, that was a nice tip!

Anyway, I’ve been trying and my messages sent to Facebook or Twitter (via Twittermail) are cut and only the first few words are published. Do you have any idea why is this happening?

  3. After having read some articles stating some method of organization of circles, I came to the conclusion that there should be an option to encircle circles inside a circle… For example this humongous guy’s list… http://goo.gl/kWYEm, would make far more sense if he could of group all those families circle in a single family circle, imagine how would that go into the stream, having to scroll down all those circles… here my two cents. After creating those circles in the circles section, a way to drag them to a single circle, showing in your stream something like what I’ll show below, where you can hit the family circle, dropping down a list to those circles inside, hitting it back, would narrow the list back…O Family (112) <<<< content they all have submitted    Family Fajardo (60) <<<< Content submitted by them    Family Hernandez (50)    Family Fajardo Hernandez (2)O Friends (54)     Closer Friends (20)    Trusted… (10)    Childhood Friends (15)    College Friends (9)O Fallowing (3000)   Sports (300)    Tech (1675)    Photographers. (115)    Music (1000)In resume guys, this would be the revolution of an already compelling revolution all together, In fact I think if google doesn't do this, I would be a very very sad panda, since im such a sucker for organization to a minimal approach, please take it into a level further.

  4. I would like to see another type of ‘smart circles’ – a bit like smart playlists in iTunes, making use of unions, exclusions, and other filters. Specifically I dislike having to add people to my friends circle AND a location-specific circle AND a context-specific circle. And I dislike making aspects of my profile visible to ‘all circles except my following circle’ etc.
